This discussion centered on whether there was enough intellectual capital in Windsor to solve our own problems, and if the intellectual capital is here, how can we, as a community, assist in maximizing this capital?

We started by saying that the intellectual capital is here and they have the vision but they need our support.

Four important areas to GROW intellectual capital in the community were identified:

1)We acknowleged the Prosperity Institutes statistical results showing that an important 'lagging indicator' was our current inability to keep our community's graduates, in our community. (See Engaging Youth).  Keeping more graduates here can be acheived if is focused on - see also best practice suggestion from Phildephia which came out of Prospertity Institute session (Establishing a mentorship program eg. An working engineer in Windsor is assigned as a mentor to a freshman Engineering student at the U. - meeting them at the train station, helping to get them into their dorm and being their to have lunches and dinners with them through their time at U.).

2)  Recognizing community social entrepreneurs, either non-profit organized or independently privately owned and support them. Examples of newer independent cultural events organized and established in the community over the last 3 years:

Windsor International Film Festival; .http://www.windsorfilmfestival.ca/

Windsor International Fringe Festival; http://www.windsorfringe.com/

FAM Festival; http://www.famfest.ca/

Windsor International Photography Seminar;http://www.internationalphotoseminar.com/

3)We also acknowledged the Prospertity Instittutes statistical results showing that an important 'leading indicator' for Windsor was the number of imigrants we have and the importance for giving them the support they need to make a contribution to our community.

4)We also acknowledge the potential intellectual capital which could be gained from helping those loosing jobs in the car industry to transition to new jobs and new businesses in our community.

-    The Antigonish project (http://www.atlanticsustainability.ca...antigonish.htm) - was a suggested model to respond to the current economic changes and pending work loss crisis  - the key here:  more networking.

-    There was acknowledgement in the room of the value that networking at this very camp had been to date.

From here some key groups were identified as intellectual capital who could better serve the community if they received support:

-     Recognizing that there are community-minded members of our Windsor who would like to become resources, but do not currently have a way of publically listing their available skills sets in order to be a resource to others.

-     Planning and support for teams who were operating in the car industry looking for ways for them to transition into a new future - emotionally and psychologically it is very challenging and they need assistance.

Access points for sharing, obtaining and analyzing information were deemed to be key:
-    Accessible entry points were already working and we need more eg.  1800- Oh Canada! Service is helping reduce the confusion people feel about accessing.  311, 211 also acknowledged to be very useful.
-    Creating resource stations open to the general public at the Library which could help those who are in transition both from other countries and from jobs here in the community.
-    Improving access by the community to grants and other services, can itself create jobs.
-    We need to make it easy for people to understand what skills they have in order to transtion to new jobs.
-incentives for laid off workers to invest their buyout $$ into new business
-support in the community to help keep people here and sustained thru hard times
-better understanding of the skills that exist in our people
-should be a city/county protal that could be a clearing house for skills/resources
-Electronic information resources at Windsor Public Library include "Career Cruiser" and "Learning Express"  -help to self-assess skills
-what can I do do?
-what do I know
-what am I good at?
-transferrable skills -designing tool to self-assess

-education: need more focus on R&D healthcare

eliminating barriers to government regulation looking for funding "op costs"
-    We have a lot of resources and great talent, we need to work together to use it.

I like a lot of the ideas from this session:
-mentor program: what might that look like as an achievable project proposal in Windsor? Who would do it and what resources could this space provide to help?

-what are three ways for this community to support and promote new cultural entrepreneurial efforts?

-on the Sault Ste Marie site an individual mentioned a book called The Big Sort, which may have ideas relevant to Windsor's newcomer demographics: example, clustering leads to social stagnation

-what would a transitioning jobs strategy look like, who should be involved (city? province? feds? Windsor U? St. Clair College? non-profits? unions? churches?) funding and/or in kind support from each? Who would drive this into being?
