How do we set roots in the community when we are affected by the world economy?
Video Summary
Past engagement of government with community e.g. FedNor, that were eliminated due to government cutbacks.
In the past communities that were one industry towns that would eventually collapse.
- Encourage Northern Ontario residents buy in Northern Ontario.
- Big global issues in media making residents think twice about plans within community.
- Are we 'huers' of wood and drawers of water? Hi tech in this day but basically the same as our ancestors. More efficient with less manpower.
- Centre of excellence in Sudbury to deal with mining innovations. Mining with out the hazards and less manpower.
- Still subject to boom and bust cycle.
- Making case for diverse or value added product. Not shipping raw materials for finishing.
- Are the problems on a global, political or business issues.
- Transitions and their roles as small businesses and their perspective.
- Perspective, What do they need? Can we provide that need? Do we have the resources - human, raw materials, financial.
- Programs for transition for small business people in Northern Ontario.
- Do we have educational programs in place? Centre of excellence.
- Dubreuilviille has shut down its lumber mill and there is still a small population until the US market is open again. How do we minimize the boom and bust cycle in this small town? Town people are thinking of value added as well as efficiency in production.
- All values of community forests taken into account to diversify the workforce, resources.
- Pillars of stabilization - education, transportation, communication (multi-media)
- Bust cycle erodes community infrastructure as tax base declines.
- Perception of workforce - future could be 20% native economy. Need training for First Nations Communities for work within community. Increased participation in the economy. Perception in Global community.
- Stats Can report 1991 to 2001 has shown Northern Ontario Communities are doing better because they are planning better.
- How can we look beyond what we have now?
