It's unfortunate that this topic did not get discussed, as it is one of the most defining factors of things to come in our society.
Every municipality needs to be planning for the future, when the cost of energy will be so high that things we take for granted today will be no longer.
The fact that Sault Ste Marie is a hub location (transportation by air, water, rail, and road) is one area that should be considered in the future planning. Eg. Travel by air will be too expensive due to Peak Oil, therefore increase rail infrastructure to outlying areas.
Peak Oil will affect how we get our food, and from how far we are able to get it. There should be some jobs in indoor grow houses.
Keep it diverse, keep the economy local (even if bartering has to become the norm within businesses in the community) and be self-sufficient on the important things that we need.
Also, good to see that SSM is becoming a leader in the alternative energy field with windfarms, and solar farms. Well done! You will not be regretting that investment.
