Gary Reinard:
Nikky "Snacks"
I had perceptions about the lack of opportunities, in the job market and the community, and felt the need to change. Open space for discussion.
How do we break down those perception:
"When they are done, they are moving" - why? There is some fundamental perception that they don't feel welcome, that they want
Some want to just get away.
"If the community was open to new ideas, open to new people."
It used to be enough to have a job, but now it's not enough
Especially for professionals, one job is not enough; they need a lot of opportunities to to their thing
Nikki: Q) Curious to know is that something potentially a "big town" idea
One guy looks for jobs or new ideas, and is told "that's not how we do things around here."
Barrier cannot be overcome;
Concern about change
Carolyn: One thing is that young people see things going on in society; we see the frustrations our parents have. we realize what is going on in our communities. We are frustrated that we "aren't in charge", and we can't do anything. Since we cannot change anything, we want to go somewhere new. ( this is the general idea some have.. that they cant do anything so they must leave to go somewhere were it is "better")
We need to change our view on change. We fear the unknown; we don't like that.
You have to keep trying to change; you have to be real passionate.
Young people have that passion, and are willing to do this. Sometimes, all it takes. The old white guys may have to go out there and ask.
if young people want change they need to go out and seek it..it may seem that nothign will coem of it but if we keep trying eventually we will get our point across and other will have to listen!
Is it laziness?
How create that kind of culture?
Don't do anything radical, don't make too much change at once. Any change agent, if you don't know if people are behind you, you have to have leaders to do something "student-focussed"
Pick your battles; you can't drink the koolaid and do things we've always done.
Gary and Tom said that it was great that people went out into the world; the issue is how to bring them back.
Tom: If you got a job in the Sault is great. It's cheap - never people don't care about cost of living.
