What is the role of the Not for Profit Sector in the Aboriginal Economy?

*What impact can the emergance of the not for profit sector have for Aboriginal people

Friendship Centre have strong econmic benefits as well as social benefits - entry into urban society and so on -
_ Cooperatives bring the economies of scale for good and services and are an entry point for young people in the economy
Not for profits are a welcoming environment - entry point - to bring people into the economy in a poitive way
Remote communities provide an untapped market for the development of the NFP
This is a very recent and emerging area of development amongst First Nations
The model of charitaabke organizations may not be applicable in FIrst Nations especially the issue of tax rebates for efforts
NFP has a role in capacity building of communites - of building econo,ies of helping to get out of the box that they live in - away from reliance on the Federal goevernment
Existing NFP's from outside of the communities need to know how to engage the communites and vice versa
Big foundaions perespcritvie in their rules and applications can be a barrier to accessing funds - how to build capaicyt for people to access - be more proctive in helping people access programmes and to make rules of applicatio and access more user friendly
@ kinds of groups in NFP - those emerging in the communites and those from the "outside"
It's a myth that there are no volunteeres on First Nations- there are lots.
NFP have started to define communites - to engage people to lan for the future and plan for the future economy
NFP brings other than cash experise, contacts and passion. Those aare the kinds of skills that are of true valu.
Can we rename it the Social economy or the third sector as opposed to NFP.
Is there a role for the NFP in Education? It is already happening in on-line educational programmes. THis particularly involves youth.
What role can NFP play in bringing back benefits to the smller commutines - in making a bridge between the non-aboriginal sector and aboriginal communities between the rural and the urban? Help to make connections?
Communties may not understand the benefits of NFP or what they even mean- education about this sector is vital.
What is the "thinking " in the NFP? How cn communites be engaged to better understand the role that NFP can play?
Engagment reqiores sesitivity to culutural isses - langauag, complexity of document - NFP have to give real thought about meaningfully engaging communties.
We need e ery day language and eevery day talk.
Engagement and the nature of the engagement is the key to succdess for the NFP
The North South Partnership is providing a good model for engagment
Outside agnecies have to be clear about their prpose.
Need for better undestanding between govenment and the NFP
NFP's have the advantage of being People Led rather than imposed values from the outside or the moneied organizaions.
THe Big NGO's need to rethink about the rules of engagment
There really needs to be a more simplified process for accessing funds
There is a booming business that thrives on helping forst nations access funding
Too many different processes for dealing with a plethora of funders rules and protocols and means of accounatbilty - how can these processes be streamlind?
NFP organizations have to be focused on generations ahead and not on the now? How to be self-sustaining? How to be independnet?
wasaya is an interseting example of a NFP that works!
Need to remember the uniqueness of the far north - 30 or more communites only accessed by air and few resources.
Red-tape is an issue for these communites especially
Do groups in Communites need to necessarily go through the Band Councils for support as opposed to just getting on with doing what they feel needs to be done?
lots of ideas at the communty level but it is hard to find support to implement the ideas.
Should canada spend more on inigineos developemnt rather than international economic developemnt
Perhaps micro-lending is better placed on First nations ? TO support local initieaes and to get around everything having to go through the Band Coucnils.
