It seems to me that the key question in agriculture is "Does Canada want to have a perpetual domestic food supply?" In discussion yesterday we heard that some factions of society simply don't care where their food comes from, and most people outside of agriculture have never considered the question. It also seems that politicians in a democratic society too often simply listen to the voters- even if the voters have never considered the question or been informed of the relevent issues. We need political leadership that confronts Canadians with this question, engenders broad support, and makes the principle of sustaining a  healthy domestic food supply an underlying theme in future policy. It seems that urban society reacts to current events driving politicians to create legislation that too often has the affect of increasing the burden on the already marginalized farm income.
