Brent is a graduate of Queen’s University, and St. Lawrence College, in Kingston, Ontario. 

After serving as Telecommunications Coordinator for the federal Ministry of Labour in Ottawa, he joined the staff of SES Research (now Nanos Research) – one of Canada’s preeminent polling and opinion research firms - as an Associate. His work involved tracking and analyzing provincial government legislation in Ontario, with a focus on municipal government regulation, as well as work on public opinion surveys and tracking.

Later, Brent became an Assistant to Mr. Harry Danford, Member of the Ontario Legislature for the riding of Hastings-Peterborough, and Parliamentary Secretary to Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs until 1999. He has also worked on national campaign tours for two Canadian Prime Ministers, Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney.

In 1997, Brent served as a member, and contributing writer, to the Community Editorial Board of the Kingston Whig-Standard.

In 2005, Brent published his first book, "The Case for Commonwealth Free Trade," and has addressed audiences both in Canada and the UK on this subject.

Currently, Brent works in a research group within Queen’s University. 

A long-time community and political activist, his previous activities have included serving as Chairman of Central Frontenac Community Services Corporation – a non-profit organization providing services to seniors and disabled adults in rural eastern Ontario. He is also a Life Member of the Toronto branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Past President of the Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington Provincial PC Constituency Association, Vice-President of the Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington Conservative Party of Canada Association; and a executive member of the Frontenac-Lennox & Addington Landowners Association.

Married to Jodi Warne, they have 2 children and reside on the family farm at Godfrey, Ontario.
