Session 3-D

April:

Focusing on the Service Industry using our current resources.
How can we utilize the BUYOUT funds and the skills of our union workers back into the economy?

Will the government create incentives for people taking buyouts and encouraging them to reinvest in our economy?

Will the banks offer incentive to keep our community growing?

This feature should be merged with the WECAN Marketing strategy that Windsor is promoting!

HOW CAN THE UNIONS THINK OUT OF THE BOX TO HELP KEEP THEIR BROTHERS BECOME ACTIVE MEMBERS IN OUR COMMUNITY?

Julian:
If gov'ts attract a lot more new businesses; but not everyone is made for business - seen by majority of people as free money.  They take the money.. it collapses 9 months later, and then they still have a ton of money.

[missed name]
When a plant closing gets announced, the ministry (university, colleges, training) get together and ask three things:

1) Can we find you another job in the same field somewhere else
2) how close are you to retirement - if so, they'll give you money for retirement
3) what's the minimum amount of training in another job

My Notes:  Strategic re-education programs instead of minimum amount of training.

April:  Exactly, I'm in Human Resources, but I don't want to be there.  I wanted to be in Marketing, but the wsib won't let me do what Interests me... since wage scale is less in marketing, I was making 33 $ an hour.  They have to cap it off.  They have invested a lot in my education.  I would of preferred to take that money and invested into a business.  I was willing to take a risk, they were not.

The governement needs to provide alternative solutions and opportuntys to people loosing their jobs.  Retraining is not the only solution.

Julian:  I have my own business providing engineering services.. but if you have a look at the tunnel or bridges, thousands of people are crossing the border for US jobs.

There is something about working the US that is better than in Canada.  You do a job right.  You know you are going to get recognition from the team... that you've accomplished something, in the US.

But that's not done in Canada.  They can't give them extra recognition in Canadian business success..  People don't like to step out.. fostering Business spirit in Ontario..

There aren't many who want to or can start businesses... don't have opportunities.  Two types of entrepeneurs.. two types of entrepeneurs.. by necessity (go where necessary) or dedication into a new business.

April:
The biggest effect in the area.. free money is pouring into "Big Three retirement funds".  People from the plants with 30-70 Gs of buyout $$.  If [she] could get 10 of those people as investors creating a new business.  This is far better than having 0 business.  How can we minimize the risk?

Creating a business and spirit?  Opening labour markets to credentials.

Barriers to business entries.. loaning money to GM or Chrysler which closes plants.
How creating business without government?

Matt:  I like how the bridge is trying to go ahead and do something new for this city, but City Council is fighting it, and stopping it.  The bridge has it's own money, and own plans.

Ryan:  Well, the government has it's own plans.. and they have their own money to build it. I'd prefer 2 billion dollars for the access route, the crossing plaza, and then the new bridge itself.  That's goign to be a huge construction boom, and this place will be awash with money, for the service industry and for new opportunities.  Change and development takes time.. tomorrow, not two or three years.  I don't think people should "panick."

Julian:  People losing their money.. people like to be focussing on the negative, not focussing on the positive.. we can't wait two or three years.

Ryan:  A big problem is government restrictions to qualifications.. physicians, pharmacists.. etc.. providing opportunities with new migrants, in diverse communities, and new jobs around these extra clinics, or labs.

Julian:  Responsbility of business owners, those with entrenpeneurship, we must try to find other ways, other industries, you offer them what you want...

Julian was surprised by diversity of contracts of manufacturing suppliers.  Companies in town are trying to break tradition of auto manufacturing.

Ryan:  Creating something outside the automotive box

Matt Bufton:  We need city council to stop standing in the way of making things happen, stop standing in the way of new ideas.

Ryan:  I'll be my own devils advocate.  You can't get elected in Windsor by saying that you need something new, you get elected by protecting manufacturing jobs.. thats true at all levels.

Julian:  Things are happening.. the University here influences a lot of future thinking.  I haven't met someone I don't like from the University of Windsor.  The problem that I see is that you go with tradition.  The tradition has been automotive.. as soon as you get out of line, there is someone to confront you about it.  There should be freedom of choice.

Entrepeneurship

Note:  freedom of choice of ideas?

April:  What is the Big Three:  Toyoto just moved down the road...Do we still just buy from the big three or do we support our communities and just by a car!
